Words of Hope from Elder Dave Smith

“But the eyes of the LORD are on those who fear Him, on those whose hope is in His unfailing love, to deliver them from death and keep them alive in famine. We wait in hope for the LORD; He is our help and our shield. In Him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in His holy name. May your unfailing love be with us, LORD, even as we put our hope in You” Psalm 33:18-22.

When we read the book of Psalms, we are reminded that there truly is nothing new under the sun. God’s people have always experienced great joys, endured great suffering, wondered about God’s goodness, praised His holy name, expressed fear and sadness, mourned the loss of loved ones, cried out in astonished wonder, and worshipped the only One who is worthy.

Recent and ongoing events are a pointed reminder that human beings are not in control, that despite all our science, technology, money and power, we are terribly vulnerable, that a microscopic virus can cause our world to spin on a new axis. Believers know that we are utterly dependent on God. Wars and pandemics and stock market crashes help to bring that dependence into sharp focus, to remind us that we are loved, that the God of the Universe sent His Son Jesus to rescue us from the world and to set us free to serve Him into eternity. What an opportunity we have been given to share the Hope of the world with the hopeless!
